Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists (GCVS)

Stormy was our beloved cat and a cherished member of our family. When he suddenly became critically ill, I rushed him to Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists. He arrived with pale gums, blood in his urine, severe weakness, and lethargy. During his examination, I specifically told the emergency veterinarian that I was concerned he may have been exposed to rat poison. Based on my recollection, I was told that if Stormy had eaten rat poison a few days earlier, he would already be dead. I also asked whether he could have become sick after eating something that had itself ingested the rat poison, and I recall that possibility being dismissed as well. Trusting the medical advice we were given, I believed rat poison was no longer a likely cause of Stormy’s condition. Stormy remained under emergency veterinary care at GCVS for more than six hours before being discharged with medications. He died the following day. Searching for answers, I authorized a necropsy through the Texas A&M Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory. The toxicology report confirmed Diphacinone (rat poison) in Stormy’s liver, and the necropsy documented extensive internal hemorrhaging. Nothing will ever bring Stormy back. What has stayed with me is that I specifically raised the possibility of rat poison during his visit because I believed it could explain his condition. Looking back after the necropsy findings, I still struggle to understand why that possibility was not more thoroughly evaluated before he was discharged. I hope GCVS carefully reviews what happened so that no other family has to experience the heartbreak and unanswered questions that we continue to live with.
